What makes craft art so much different than folk art is rather simple. Craft artwork are pieces that are usually made by a trained professional. Since the late 1800’s there has been a continual uprising of more and more institutions developed especially for the art of craft. Craft art has many different forms such as pottery, furniture, jewelry, glass, textiles, metalware or any other type of art that requires the shaping of the materials. Many of the pieces can take on a very contemporary feel, especially the blown glass pieces. Many of the famous makers of this art have been creating these crafts for many years. Their pieces have lasting influences and sometimes make bold statements.
Folk art is a bit different from craft art. Most pieces deemed as folk art were pieces created by people who were very unskilled. Often the pieces were created for a regular every day use, like a sugar jar or butter tray. These pieces were not so much known for their effect they had on society, but rather the reflected the current status of the society at that given time. Folk art was used for religious purposes and sometimes even domestic purposes. Much different than craft art which is specifically designed for the purpose of being art, and not used in every day life.
